About Us, | Camp River Lake | camps school functions teambuilding leadership cam...

Mark and Shiela Thornhill started Camp Riverlake a little over 3 years ago (beginning of 2009) on a shoestring budget and with only a couple of clients. Before 2009 they acquired extensive experience as Camp Directors at other similar type of school camps (which they entered into after a Restaurant Management background) and thus discovered that they had a passion for working with school- and church-groups. After finding the ideal site, they decided to start their own camping-business.

The main focus of Camp Riverlake is simple: “let us make sure that the kids enjoy themselves tremendously – this camp is for them!” To achieve this , we have molded the whole camping experience along the lines of the so-called “ American summer camps” rather than the old-style “veldschool”. We make sure that the kids are well-fed (balanced three meals per day with fruits, veggies and even some pudding!) and that they have fun while still experiencing the kind of team-building and / or acquiring leadership skills that the school may want.

Within the past three years we have built up an extensive and loyal client-base among schools as varied as exclusive private schools to much poorer Township schools – our rates remain as low as possible and are always negotiable in order to cater for everyone.

The camp site is approximately 30km outside of Vanderbijlpark in the direction of Potchefstroom right next to the Vaal River with 350m riverfront. Mark himself acts as Camp Director and with his group of well-trained councilors keep the kids busy with various activities day and night depending on the type of camp (adventure, environmental, leadership and / or team-build).

There is a tuck shop available and we cater for any special dietary considerations – e.g. Halaal, vegetarian, allergies, etc.

Please contact Stefan or Mark for any further details – we are always willing to make an appointment to come and see you at the school and / or arrange for school representatives to come and view the campsite.
